Alumni Profile: Aaron Feldman, Randy Sklar and Jason Sklar

Jason and Randy Sklar and Aaron Feldman (all Nivonim 1988) have been friends since their Machon summer. Recently they embarked on a project born out of a relationship that was formed at Ramah.

In a conversation with Alumni Coordinator Robin Rubenstein, Jason and Randy said that the decision to go to Ramah was a big moment in their lives. It was a turn from focusing on sports to exploring new areas. They had leads in the Nivo English play and gained new skills. Looking back at the experience, they feel that Ramah played a huge part in paving the way to their success.

sklarThe Sklar Brothers grew up in St. Louis and while they were at the University of Michigan they decided to pursue a career in comedy. They have released 4 critically acclaimed comedy albums, have had two Comedy Central Half Hour Presents specials, and have a Netflix special titled “What Are We Talking About.”

Randy and Jason are also writers, directors and actors appearing in a wide variety of shows from Entourage to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia to Maron to Curb Your Enthusiasm. They are perhaps most well known for their show Cheap Seats, a cult hit that appeared on ESPN Classic for 77 episodes.

feldmanTheir camp friend Aaron Feldman, who grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, is a feature film director, writer and producer with over 20 years of experience in the entertainment industry. He has sold and developed screenplays for Hollywood studios such as CANAL +, MGM, FOX, and FoxASIA. Before entering the film industry, Aaron worked in counter terrorism in the DC area. He sold his first feature film about his experience.

Ramah Sings Hame'irah

Inspired by the Israeli phenomenon Koolulam and utilizing a mash-up of original music from our very own Josh Warshawsky and his collaborator Coleen Dieker and the inspiring work of Nava Tehilah in Jerusalem, this summer our campers and staff came together to sing, harmonize and hum these beautiful words based on the Shacharit morning service:

הַמְּאִירָה לְאֶרֶץ וְלַדָּרִים עָלֶיהָ בָּרַחֲמִים
וּבַטּוֹבָה מְחַדֶּשֶׁת בְּכָל יוֹם תָּמִיד מַעֲשֶׂה בָּרָאשִׁית

“The Holy One, who lights up the world and all of her inhabitants with mercy. And in God's goodness, every single day, She renews the act of creation."

More Updates

  • Baruch Dayan HaEmet – We extend condolences to the Drazen Family on the death of Rabbi Paul Drazen in June 2018. Paul was a Ramah Wisconsin camper (Nivonim 1968) and met his wife Susie (Alpert) (Nivonim 1970) at camp. Through the 1970’s, during his graduate student years, he served as Camp Ramah in Wisconsin Program Director, Business Manager and Assistant to the Director. During his rabbinic career as Assistant Rabbi at Beth El Synagogue in St. Louis Park, MN and as Senior Rabbi at Congregation Beth El in Omaha, he was very instrumental in sending campers to Ramah. Paul and Susie’s children Gila (Nivonim 1996) and Yoni (Nivonim 2000) were both campers and staff members. In the 90’s and 2000’s, Paul served as camp rabbi-in-residence and Susie and Paul led educational retreats at camp. Paul was a valuable Ramah partner in his roles as Executive Director of the Mid-Continent Region of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and as Special Assistant to the CEO of USCJ. Most recently Paul served as the rabbi of Temple Adath Yeshurun in Syracuse, NY.
  • Baruch Dayan HaEmet -  We extend condolences to the Bonowitz Family on the death of Marvin Bonowitz in August 2018.  Marvin worked as camp nurse for many years and his wife Anne was our Rosh Hinuch.  Marvin and Anne’s children Alan (Nivonim 1978), David (Nivonim 1979) and  Susan  (Nivonim 1983) were campers.  Marvin served on the faculty of the Grant Hospital School of Nursing in Columbus and later retired from The Ohio State University Hospital.
